Bidas M., Miłkowski M. 2005. Beetles of the superfamily Scarabaeoidea in Radom region. Kulon 10: 3-11.

Marek Bidas, ul. Mazurska 64 m 91, PL-25-342 Kielce

Abstract. In 1990-2005, we recorded 62 species of Scarabaeoidea. The material was collected in the Radom region, mainly from the Kozienicka Forest. 18 new species were identified as compared with Siekierski (2003): Trox scaber, Onthophagus coenobita, Aphodius nemoralis, A. granarius, A. conspurcatus, A. coenosus, A. sphacelatus, A. fasciatus, A. porcus, Oxyomus sylvestris, Psammodius asper, Rhyssemus germanus, Gnorimus nobilis, Protaetia lugubris, Tropinota hirta, Dorcus parallelipipedus, Sinodendron cylindricum, Aesalus scarabaeoides. A high number of beetles of the family Lucanidae and group Scarabaeidae pleurosticti feeding on decaying wood indicate a highly natural character of this forest. Especially valuable species comprise Protaetia aeruginosa, D. parallelipipedus, S. cylindricum, and A. scarabaeoides. A major threat to Scarabaeoidea is presented by the loss of habitat, thus disappearance of old decaying trees with holes, as a result of human activity, mainly forest management, or so called „healing of trees”. Rare species of coprophages (Euoniticellus fulvus, Aphodius conspurcatus, A. porcus) are threatened because of the disappearance of grazing by livestock and the common application of chemicals in agriculture, including pharmacological substances such as hormones and antibiotics expelled with faeces.

Szczepaniak P. 2005. White-backed Woodpecker Dendrocopos leucotos in zones of strict protection „Łysica” and „Święty Krzyż” in the Świętokrzyski National Park. Kulon 10: 13-20.

Paweł Szczepaniak, Pracowania Naukowo-Badawcza, Świętokrzyski Park Narodowy, ul. Suchedniowska 4, PL-26-010 Bodzentyn, szczepan@swietokrzyskipn.org.pl

Abstract. Since January through May 2002, numbers of the White-backed Woodpecker were censused in the zones under strict protection „Łysica” and „Święty Krzyż” (covering jointly an area of 1662.79 ha) in Świętokrzyski National Park. Playback recording of calls and drumming was used to elicit responses. The percentage of responding birds was relatively low. The birds were observed on 68 occasions. Five active holes were found, including two broods that fledged. The number of breeding pairs estimated by using the combined version of the mapping technique was 14 (0.84 pairs/km2). Moreover, some behavioural (antagonistic and anti-predator) and ecological (food) observations were made.

Grzegorz Grzywaczewski, Katedra Zoologii AR w Lublinie, ul. Akademicka 13, PL-20-950 Lublin, grzegorz.grzywaczewski@ar.lublin.pl

Abstract. The study was conducted in 2002-2003 in the Lublin Upland, Roztocze highland, Wołyń Upland, Polesie Lubelskie, fragments of Sandomierska Basin and south-Podlasian Lowland. A total of 360 sacred buildings were monitored, including those actually used as schools, museums, and the like. In 82 buildings (22.8%) there were old pellets, feathers, and carcasses of Barn Owls Tyto alba. Only 68 sites (19,0%) were actually occupied by this owl. The highest number of sites (54 or 79.4%) was located on uplands, that is in the Lublin Upland, Wołyń Upland, and Western Roztocze. In the lowland part, mainly in Polesie, only 14 (20,6%) occupied sites were found. The Tawny Owl Strix aluco was recorded at 43 sites (11,9%). At the majority of sites, Tawny Owls occupied trees with holes surrounding sacred buildings. The Little owl Athene noctua was found in only four sacred objects. No breeding Long-eared Owl Asio otus was recorded in sacred objects or in the vicinity. Nests of the Kestrel Falco tinnunculus were noted on 5 churches, where 1 to 3 pairs were breeding. Traces of the presence of the beech marten Martes foina, most often individuals and faeces, were noted in 62 objects (17,2%). Bats Chiroptera, were recorded in 183 (50,1%) objects. These were breeding colonies, single individuals and their remains, also faeces

Tabor M., Tabor J. 2005. Diet of the Montagu’s Harrier Circus pygargus on carbonate fens near Chełm in the breeding season. Kulon 10: 33-42.

Małgorzata Tabor, Publiczne Gimnazjum w Inowłodzu, ul. Spalska 5, PL-97-215 Inowłódz, malgorzatatabor1@wp.pl

Abstract. The diet of the Montagu’s Harrier in the carbonate fens near Chełm, eastern Poland, was determined from the analysis of pellets collected in 1988-1989. In total, 262 prey items were found in 143 pellets collected from nests and night-roosting platforms. Insects were the dominant group (41.2%), followed by mammals (36.3%), and birds (22.5%). During incubation, mammals were the dominant prey (39.6%), whereas insects during rearing nestlings (43.8%), and mammals again in the post-fledging period (44.9%). Among mammalian prey, rodents were most abundant, and beetles among insects. All birds in the diet were represented by passerines. In five cases, eggs of birds were found.

Żmihorski M., Kurpiński D., Osojca G., Jarzombkowski F. 2005. OWLS OF KAMPINOSKI NATIONAL PARK (CENTRAL POLAND). Kulon 10: 43-46.

Michał Żmihorski, Zakład Ekologii, Uniwersytet Warszawski, ul. Banacha 2, PL-02-097 Warszawa, zmihor@interia.pl

Abstract. Numbers and species composition of the owls Strigiformes in eastern part of Kampinoski National Park (156,6 km2, 52019’N, 20046’E) were estimated by using the standard mapping technique with voice broadcasting. Results were compared with previous study, conducted here in 1984. Two breeding species were recorded: Tawny Owl and Long-eared Owl. No breeding Little Owl was recorded in 2003 and its population number declined sharply since 1984, when 9 pairs had been recorded. Tawny Owl population seems to remain stable and Long-eared Owl number is not clear.

Olech B., Pruszyński M. 2005. NUMBERS OF BIRDS OF PREY FALCONIFORMES IN THE BREEDING SEASON IN AGRICULTURAL LANDSCAPE NEAR PŁOŃSK. Kulon 10: 47-50.

Bogumiła Olech, Kampinoski Park Narodowy, ul. Tetmajera 38, PL-05-080 Izabelin, bolech@kampinoski-pn.gov.pl

Abstract. In 1996-1998, numbers of birds of prey Falconiformes were estimated on a study plot of 125 km2 located south of Płońsk. This was a square-like area between the localities Wrona Stara - Wólka Smoszewska - Przybojewo Nowe - Krysk (20030’E, 52030’N). Forests occupied about 12% of this area. The largest part (about 88%) was traditionally cultivated, and characterized by a high proportion of orchards and plantations of raspberries and strawberries. Green crops (hay meadows, pastures) did not exceed 10%. Nesting species comprised the Goshawk (5-12 pairs, depending on the year), Buzzard (11-21), Honey Buzzard (1-3), Sparrow Hawk (8-9), Marsh Harrier (1-2), and Montagu’s Harrier (1); probably nesting were Kestrel and Hen Harrier.

Dombrowski A. 2005. AUTUMN MIGRATION OF WATER BIRDS AND WADERS/WATERFOWL ON FISHPONDS. Kulon 10: 50-59.

Andrzej Dombrowski, ul. Świerkowa 18, PL-08-110 Siedlce, adomb@tlen.pl

Abstract. In 1981 and 1983-1984, in total 31 autumn surveys were conducted on fishponds in Wilga (120 ha), Garwolin district, Mazovian Province (51050’N, 21023’E). In total 42 species of water birds and waders were recorded. The Black-headed Gull Larus ridibundus was the most abundant species - 148.9 ind./100 ha per count on the average, more than half of the total number of birds (53.3%), followed by Lapwing Vanellus vanellus (14.4%), Heron Ardea cinerea (9.3%), and Coot Fulica atra (6.1%). Large differences in numbers of birds were found from year to year and between October and November. In 1981 and 1983, the number of birds was much higher in October, whereas in 1984 it was higher in November. The number of species was the highest in October in all the years. Birds hunting in flight were most abundant (59.1%), followed by meadow-marsh birds (18.3%). Trophic groups were predominated by polyphages (59.1%) and entomophages (18.6%). High number of records of the species migrating along the Vistula was due to the location of the study ponds in the valley of this river (Herring Gull/Yellow-legged Gull, Sanderling, Turnstone).

Ciach M., Gwardjan M., Zięcik P. 2005. OCCURRENCE OF THE SPIDER ARGIOPE BRUENNICHI IN THE MAŁOPOLSKA UPLAND AND SOUTHERN MAZOVIA. Kulon 10: 81-86.

Michał Ciach, Zakład Zoologii Leśnej i Łowiectwa, Wydział Leśny Akademii Rolniczej w Krakowie, al. 29 Listopada 46, PL- 31-425 Kraków, mciach@ar.krakow.pl

Abstract. In the Małopolska Upland, the spider Argiope bruennichi was recorded for the first time in the 1970s, and successive sites were noted there in the 1990s. At the same time, this species was also recorded from southern Mazovia. In recent years, the number of reported sites of this species markedly increased. The present paper reviews the data on the occurrence of this species in the Małopolska Upland, Central-Mazovian Lowland, and South-Mazovian Upland in 1991-2004. It has been found that this spider is common in these areas, and that it colonized southern part of Mazovia earlier than so far suggested. No habitat preference was found as it occurs in different kinds of non-forested habitats. Its webs were discovered on a house. Based on the literature and on the present data, it may be concluded that this spider colonized the Małopolska Upland and southern Mazovia while expanding its range in the first half of the 1990s, and thus become a common species in these regions on the turn of the century.

Kurek P., Święciak T. 2005. SITES OF THE RUNNING TOAD BUFO CALAMITA IN THE ORLE GNIAZDA LANDSCAPE PARK AND ITS BUFFER ZONE. Kulon 10: 87-89.

Przemysław Kurek, Mirów 31, PL-42-320 Niegowa, kurekp3@wp.pl

Abstract. In 2001-2004, running toads were surveyed in the Orle Gniazda Landscape Park and its buffer zone (southern Poland). It has been found that sites Jaworznik, Światowit and Myszków may form a single larger area of its occurrence, whereas Łutowiec, Zawada and Poczesna should be considered as separate sites. The value of these data is augmented by the fact that actions for the protection of amphibians organized in 2000-2004 by different sections of the Ensemble of Landscape Parks in the Silesian Province failed to discover this species.
